海角直播 Respiratory Care Celebrates 50 Years

The 海角直播 Respiratory Care program celebrated its 50th anniversary during a ceremony on October 22 at the Nolan Ryan Center.

The program is one of the first Allied Health programs at 海角直播 and was first accredited in 1976.

Many former students and faculty members attended the reception.

鈥淐elebrations like this make us extremely proud,鈥 said 鈥楤el Sanchez, 海角直播 Board of Regents chair. 鈥淭hank you for all that you have done and for all that you are doing.鈥

Former Respiratory Care Director Diane Flatland first joined the program in 1981 and watched the program grow. She spoke at the reception about the history of the program.

鈥淲e have had a lot of students who have excelled in the field,鈥 said Diane Flatland, former Respiratory Care program director. 鈥淪ome are now managers, supervisors, company representatives. I have been pleased with all of our graduates and faculty. They have done a great job.鈥

Respiratory therapists work with patients of all ages, from premature babies with underdeveloped lungs to an elderly individual who may have been affected by disease, get the oxygen they desperately need to live. Therapists also provide patients the treatments and other resources to improve their quality of life.

鈥淚 loved seeing so many familiar faces come together to celebrate 50 years of Alvin College Respiratory Care, a program I鈥檓 proud to be a product of and now have the opportunity to help shape its future,鈥 said Sarah Hightower, Respiratory Care director and a program graduate.

The program received accreditation reaffirmation in March 2026 from the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
